The Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) of Philippines, the research arm of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), has developed a low-cost technology innovation that seeks to allow remote community centres to access the Internet wirelessly. ASTI director Denis Villorente said the institute has developed PC-based access points for Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) internet connectivity. HE said ASTI's access point is about three to four times less costly than the commercial access points. The initiative is primarily intended to cater to the Department of Transportation and Communication's (DoTC) project to set up electronic community centres around the country. - (World IT Report.com)
