QLD: Labor vows to win back Gaven at general election

The BEATTIE government's vowed to win back the Gold Coast seat of Gaven from the Coalition
at the next general election after Labor's third consecutive by-election defeat tonight.

Nationals member Dr ALEX DOUGLAS has about 41-and-a-half per cent of votes at the end
of tonight's polling .. compared to Labor's PHIL GRAY .. who trails with less than 37-and-a-half
per cent after 72 per cent of the votes were counted.

Dr DOUGLAS has claimed victory .. claiming a notional result of more than 52 per cent.

A relieved Premier PETER BEATTIE is putting a positive spin on the loss .. saying he
thought the swing to the Coalition would be far worse.

And .. Labor's vowed to work hard to get the seat back.
