Fed: National road toll rises to 19

The national road toll for the holiday period has risen to 19 with another death in
New South Wales.

The latest death occurred in an accident on the New South Wales north coast near Grafton
yesterday afternoon.

It brings the New South Wales toll for the holiday period to 12.

Victoria and Western Australia have each recorded one death, Queensland three and South
Australia two.

Police have again pleaded with motorists to slow down and take rest breaks.

New South Wales police alone charged almost 7,000 drivers with speeding in the first
three days of the holiday period.

A double demerit points campaign which began at midnight last Thursday in New South
Wales has had limited success deterring drivers from speeding.

Traffic Services Commander Chief Superintendent RON SORRENSON says speeding is one
of the fatal four causes of the carnage on New South Wales roads this year.

Police are urging everyone to be aware of the fatal four: speeding, drink driving,
not wearing a seatbelt and driving while tired.

(Eds: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 22 to 2359 January
7 AEDT. Some states and territories have different periods.)
