NSW: Carr rules out "cannabis cafe" proposal on health grounds

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR has ruled out plans to set up a series of so-calledcannabis cafes around the state.

NSW Greens MLC LEE RHIANNON plans to introduce the proposal in a private members billwhen parliament resumes next week.

Patrons would be able to buy and use cannabis at three cafes -- in Sydney, on the northcoast and another regional area -- as part of a trial.

Ms RHIANNON says the cafes would allow young people to access information about thehealth impact of the drug as well as counselling.

But Mr CARR says the latest evidence is that cannabis has links to schizophrenia anddepression, and the last thing you'd want to do is give it the good housekeeping sealof approval.

He denies a parallel can be drawn with the government's heroin injecting room trial, saying heroin kills.
